


The Mass celebrating the life of H. Thomas Hobday, MD will be 12:30 PM Tuesday, November 2, at Christ Church Newman Center in St. Cloud. Burial will be in the St. John’s Abbey Cemetery. Tom, age 73, died of cancer Thursday at his home in St. Cloud. There will be a time for friends to gather from 3-8:00 PM at the Miller-Carlin Funeral Home in St. Cloud and again at 11:00 AM Tuesday at Christ Church Newman Center. The Newman Center parish prayers will be at 7:30 PM Monday at the funeral home.Tom was born May 12, 1937 in Le Center, MN to Herbert and Bernadette (Trembley) Hobday and graduated from Le Center High School, St. John’s University, and the University of Minnesota Medical School. Tom married Kathleen Flanagan on August 3, 1963 in St. Paul. After two years in the Indian Health Service on the Navajo Reservation and several residencies, the couple moved to St. Cloud in 1971, where he practiced ophthalmology and retired from Eye Surgeons and Physicians in 2003. Tom’s thirst for knowledge was great, demonstrated by his participation in multiple book clubs, Spanish lessons, and numerous elder-hostel trips that he and Kathleen shared—all the time taking notes. He loved to play tennis, bike, and cross-country ski and was an avid supporter of his kids and their interests.Tom is preceded in death by his parents and survived by his wife, Kathleen; his children and grandchildren, Tom and Robin Hobday and daughters Erin and Lauren of St. Cloud; Hud and Julia Hobday and children Tom, Lily, Danny, and Luke of St. Paul; Mary Jurney and sons Tim and Patrick of Apple Valley; Tim and Kristen Hobday and children Sara, Megan, Grace, and Jack of Rochester; Meg Hobday and Tony Bacigalupi and children Kathleen and Andrew of St. Paul; Patty Hobday and Ryan Strack and son Hawksley of Minneapolis; and Ann and Matt Graeve and daughters Natalie and Maggie of Little Falls; and his sisters and brother-in-laws, Ann and Bryon Lundmark of Plains, MT; and Cathy and Jim Dey of Waseca, MN.Tom and his family lived in gratitude for the many caregivers who supported them spiritually and physically over the past two years.Memorials are preferred. Two of Tom’s favorite organizations were the Newman student programs and Caritas Food Assistance.

This is your grandson Tom. I dont have many memories of you, but the ones that I do are good. My parents sometimes mention you, and I can see the love and respect they have. I hope you know that you are remembered and we love you so much.
